Welcome to Year 1
PE – Our PE day will be a Thursday. Please ensure all children have a full PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and trainers or plimsoles) in school on these days and all jewellery is removed. We also ask that girls with long hair have it tied up.
Homework – You will be given a learning log at the beginning of the year for your homework. This will be sent home each week on a Wednesday and should be returned to school the following Monday. Please choose and complete 1 activity from your learning log each week. We will also send home sounds from our Read Write Inc programme weekly for you to practise.
From time to time we may send additional homework that fits in with what we are learning about that week.
Home Readers – It is important children change their books every week to help them develop their reading skills. Please return their books and reading record signed once you have completed the book. Our days to change reading books will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Your child will continue to be sent home with Read Write Inc book until they are on Orange books, when they will move on to Oxford Reading Tree.
Bug Club will continue to run alongside our home readers.
Please encourage your child to read as much as possible over the coming year, it is vital that your child progresses at a good rate to ensure that they are able to develop key skills in reading. There is a clear link between reading and writing, if a child works hard on their reading skills and is challenged to the best of their ability this will reflect on both their writing ability and speaking. Having a child with a rich knowledge of vocabulary and grammar will have a great impact on their overall progress.
Collecting your child after school –Year 1 children are collected from the top of the yard. Although we bring them out of the KS1 door, we ask parents to wait halfway down the yard to enable us to see all parents/carers and safely hand over children.
If you are unable to collect your child at any point and someone else is collecting them please let the office know on the day. The safety of your child is very important.
Support Your Child’s Learning
Each half term you will receive a curriculum overview from your child’s class teacher. We hope the information will help you support your child’s learning. Please feel free to talk to the class teacher about any area of the curriculum.
