Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

  • Class teacher: Miss Smith
  • Teaching Assistant: Miss Louth
Miss Smith – Class Teacher
Miss Louth – Key Stage 2 Teaching Assistant

We would like to welcome you to Year 3.

We hope you had a good holiday and that your child is ready for this year. Miss Smith and Miss Louth are looking forward to working with the children and providing the support and guidance they need to maximise their learning potential and become the best that they can be.

It is essential that children try their hardest both in school and with their homework. We have found in previous years that the children who consolidated their learning by completing their homework well obtained better results at the end of the year.

Reading

Please ensure your child reads every night, signing and dating their reading record. All children will begin the  Accelerated Reader program on Monday 7th September. They will be given a book, asked to read it and return it each day, completing a test at the end of each book to show their understanding. Some books are thin and are easy to read in one night. Some books are thicker and require longer to read. Your child is not expected to complete a book per night but must return the book each day (even if it is unfinished) so that they can read in school reading sessions and make good progress.  When a test has been completed, they will receive a % score. Anything at 60% or above is considered a pass. If the children do not score 60% they will be asked to reread the book and retake the test. If children do not return their reading book every day they will read in the classroom at playtime. This is key stage 2 policy throughout years 3, 4, 5 and 6.  Children’s book level will be assessed each half term to check that they are on the correct level. This program continues throughout years 4, 5 and 6.

English and Maths

From the 10th September, homework will be given out every Thursday and must be returned by the following Thursday. This will give you the opportunity to complete it at a convenient time – it also allows your child the time to come to me with questions, should they need to. Homework that is not completed will be done in golden time on  Friday afternoon.

Spelling

Children will be focusing on various spelling rules throughout the year. They will be given a spelling list of 10 spellings to learn and they will be tested the following week. These will include some words containing spelling rules and some from the year 3 word list.

PE

PE will take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Children are to come to school wearing their PE kits , including t-shirt, trainers and jogging bottoms or leggings on this day. Shorts are not required.

Class Dojo

We will use Class Dojo to send out reminders and add anything we have been up to in class onto our story. Please check daily and feel free to message Miss Smith with any queries and concerns! If you are not on Class Dojo please ask for a login code.

Long Term Plans

The long term plan provides an overview of each year group’s curriculum by subject. The long term plans may alter slightly as the year progresses as we evaluate and refine our curriculum to ensure it best meets the needs of our children. If you would like more detailed information about a particular subject, please go to the Curriculum section of our website
