Anglo-Saxon Life
Year 4 went on an adventure to Bede’s World this week as part of their topic on the Anglo-Saxons and farming. The children visited the seventh century farm which has a collection of rare breed animals that would have been present 1,300 years ago. They discovered the sorts of buildings, animals, food, work and materials that would have been familiar to a thegn (a tenant farmer who served the lord of the manor). The class visited an Anglo-Saxon hut and uncovered that the family pet was not a dog or a cat but a bullock! Life wasn’t easy on the farm. It took the children ages to grind flour in a stone wheel and all their clothes had to be hand stitched. The class had a fantastic day and Mrs Lamb and Miss Cropper were very pleased with their impeccable behaviour and enthusiasm.
